Why Now is the Perfect Time to Start Waking Up Early (and How It Changed My Life as a Mom)
As the seasons shift, now is the perfect time to establish an early morning routine, especially as we adjust to daylight saving time. Instead of shifting your clock and routines to match, try keeping your wake-up and bedtime steady. For instance, if you usually wake up at 6 AM, keep waking up at that hour on the new clock, which will be 5 AM.
I've found that waking up at 5 AM is a game-changer in my life as a mom of three. This quiet hour before everyone else is awake is my sanctuary. I start my day with meditation, self-care (like skincare!), a workout, and a nourishing breakfast—all before 7 AM when my kids need me to be fully present to get them ready for school. Having this time to myself not only makes me feel peaceful but also helps my family start their day in a calm, unrushed environment.
The difference is clear. On days I wake up early, I’m more centered and in control, allowing my kids to experience a mom who’s ready and present without the usual morning rush. Whether I've been a stay-at-home mom, a full-time student, or a working mom, this early routine has been the best way to bring consistency and calm into my life.
This week, try setting your clock to wake up an hour earlier than usual and experience the benefits of having time to yourself before the world wakes up. Embrace this change to foster a routine that can bring peace, structure, and energy into your day.
Example of my morning schedule
5:00 AM – Wake up, start the day with a gratitude prayer.
5:10 AM – Begin oil pulling and change into workout clothes.
5:15 AM – Brush teeth while water heats up for hydration.
5:20 - 5:45 AM – Enjoy warm water with lemon and a pinch of salt while reading a book.
5:45 - 6:00 AM – Meditate.
6:00 - 6:45 AM – Exercise (strength training or Pilates at home).
6:45 - 7:00 AM – Have a balanced breakfast.
Some mornings vary between 5:20 - 6:00 AM. On certain days, I may take a walk in the park, meditate longer without reading, or switch up my routine by meditating first and reading afterward, depending on how I feel.
7:00 AM – 8:20 AM: Wake Kids and Prepare for School
Wake the kids, help them get dressed, and ensure everyone has what they need for school.
Prepare breakfast for the kids.
Make sure backpacks, lunches, and snacks are ready to go.
8:20 AM – 9:15 AM: School Drop-Off & Morning Household Prep
Drop the kids off at school.
Tidy up the house.
